Florida has some of the highest insurance rates in the US. Drivers, therefore, are always looking for new quotes from Florida auto insurance companies in order to try to reduce their premiums.

Because Florida has the largest number of senior citizens along with a large number of illegal aliens who drive without licenses or insurance, premiums tend to force the younger, legal drivers to pay for all damages.

Getting a quote is easy if you tell the truth about your driving history and are willing to provide personal information such as your social security number. Florida premiums are largely based on your credit score, and then on your driving record.

Insurance agents are loathe to waste time with you if you just want a “ballpark” number. People think that if they don’t admit to speeding tickets, DUIs, and parking violations they will never be found out. What happens is that the agent gives you a quote based on erroneous information. You like the numbers, apply for the coverage, and find out that your premium is 300% more than what you had thought!

Of course, the other problem you need to deal with is that if you get quotes from too many insurance companies, and they each check your credit history, this alone with adversely affect your ability to get a decent premium. Companies who look at your credit report and see that five or ten insurance companies have already looked, this seems like you are being turned down. They already think the worse!

When you are interested in getting quotes, whether you think you can find something cheaper, or maybe you are moving, do plenty of research before asking for quotes. If you are just shopping for something cheaper, make sure you have an idea why you could be overpaying now. Not everyone can get cheaper insurance just because there are hundreds of TV commercials telling you it’s possible.

If you want insurance quotes because you’ve been a safe driver for five years, or you bought a car with all sorts of safety equipment, that’s one thing. If you just want to buy cheaper insurance because it’s a budgeting problem, you may be in a for a surprise. You rates might be increased because your FICO score dropped since your original policy was issued, or that ticket your teenage son got last year hasn’t yet been reflected in your new premiums.

Florida auto insurance works differently from other states. Good drivers without any legal problems are only responsible for PIP and property damage. Ten thousand is the minimum required for each of these policies. An additional K in coverage is also required to cover each individual accident. However, none of these amounts covers your medical bills if you are injured in an accident. To meet this concern, you must get bodily injury coverage. Such coverage is not mandated in the state of Florida, but it is still advisable for most drivers. With the states standard policies, the other driver is protected you are not. Since Florida is a No-Fault jurisdiction, it is assumed that the other drivers policy will cover you, as they would be under the same requirements. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. The other driver could be uninsured or underinsured, which would mean no compensation on your end.

Your legal history is another concern in the world of Florida auto insurance. In other states, the insurance company penalizes bad drivers, but in Florida, the process is bureaucratized. Two forms are used in this assessment: FR44 and SR-22. FR44 is becoming far more common than its SR-22 cousin is. Any driver who has a history of DUIs, license forfeitures or felony convictions must file it. Once it is filed, the insurance company sends it to the Florida Bureau of Financial Responsibility, as the organization will not take the form from an individual. From there, the driver pays up to ten times more for their coverage. Instead of needing only K for PIP and property damage, drivers must acquire 0K and K respectively. For per-accident coverage, drivers must get 0K. These incredible differences will definitely affect a drivers monthly premium. While a normal driver could get away with paying a month, an at-risk driver might have to pay over 0. This is why at-risk drivers need to research which providers they decide to get insurance from carefully. True, they cannot eliminate their fees, but with the right provider, they can get something more reasonable.

The same is also true for those needing to file an SR-22 with their Florida auto insurance. However, the SR-22 does not legally mandate higher requirements; in fact, they are in lieu with the standard legislation. With SR-22s, perception becomes the main issue. While an SR-22 applicant is not as bad as an FR44, for insurance purposes, they are not viewed as being the most responsible. SR-22 applicants have accumulated points and/or failed to pay child support. They may also be guilty of negligent driving. Consequently, when an insurance provider sees an SR-22, they are inclined to charge higher rates. Researching online quotes is the only way to minimize this problem, as SR-22s and their FR44 cousins are not optional. If these forms are not filed with an insurance company, drivers could get their licenses revoked.

There are so many Florida auto insurance companies to choose from that it can be daunting if you are new driver taking out an insurance policy for the first time. It can help if you have a parent, friend or relative living in the same city as you who can recommend a good auto insurance company to you. If you do not know of anyone in your city who can give you helpful advice, then you may want to consider looking up auto insurance companies online. You can also find online reviews, both positive and negative, on a number of auto insurance companies. Seeing what others have had to say about a particular company can help you to make a wise decision regarding which auto insurance company you should use.

However, it is also important to realize that there are many factors that have a bearing on how much your auto insurance will cost. Even what type of vehicle you drive and what purpose it is used for are factors. If you are taking out an insurance policy on a vehicle that is owned by your business or company or is mostly used by your business or company, you will need to take out a commercial auto insurance policy.

Florida auto insurance companies will also charge you more for your insurance policy if you are young, have just gotten your driver’s license, or if you have caused an auto accident. It is also important to realize that the cost of your insurance policy is not ‘set in stone’ – it can, in fact, fluctuate depending on your driving record. If you are a young person taking out an auto insurance policy for the first time, you can be comforted to know that the cost of your insurance will go down over time, especially if you are a safe and cautious driver.

There are many different type of auto insurance policies. You will of course need to get the minimum coverage as required by Florida law. However, if you have the budget for it, there are also additional forms of coverage that you may find helpful and even vital. Under-insured or uninsured motorist coverage will cover the medical bills for you and anyone else in your car should you be hit by an uninsured or under-insured driver.

Comprehensive coverage will cover you vehicle should it be stolen, vandalized or damaged in inclement weather. Bodily injury liability covers the medical bills of the other party should you cause an accident. Collision coverage is another very useful form of auto insurance to consider. If you hit an animal, tree, telephone pole, etc., collision coverage will cover your vehicle. You should note that collision coverage and comprehensive coverage are not usually a good investment if your car is old.

Article by Jean S. Butler

Many view auto insurance as a costly expense that provides no value. But, if you have ever been in an accident, you know that having car insurance is extremely valuable. It protects millions of Americans from paying out of pocket for property damage, medical expenses and other liabilities. Many states require a minimum of liability coverage for vehicles on the road. However, there are several advantages for obtaining full auto insurance coverage.

Comprehensive Coverage

Complete auto insurance coverage includes comprehensive coverage, also known as other-than-collision coverage. When you buy a vehicle you are making a sizable investment that you want to last for several years. Unfortunately unexpected things happen that are beyond our control. Comprehensive coverage protects your investment from storms, fire, animals and other non-collision related damages. The coverage is rather inexpensive for the protection that it provides.

Collision Coverage

When liable in an accident, the insurance company works quickly to restore the other party’s vehicle, property and other damages quickly; however, your car is still in need of repairs. Collision coverage restores your vehicle after an accident. Prices vary depending on the deductible that is selected. If you do not mind paying some money out of pocket after an accident, a higher deductible is best for you. Complete auto insurance policy by adding collision coverage and ensure that both parties will be able to recover after an accident.

Under-Insured And Uninsured Motorist Coverage

To get the maximum auto insurance policy coverage, add under-insured and uninsured motorist coverage to your policy. These only cost a few extra dollars and provide big value. If the driver that is liable to you is not insured or does not have enough insurance, this portion of the policy provides you with coverage for bodily injury and property damage.

Having only liability coverage may protect you from being liable to others for the damage you cause, but it leaves you stuck in mud trying to recover after an accident. Purchasing full auto insurance coverage restores you after an accident or some other type of damage to your vehicle.

Article by Clifford Schimek

Am I covered if I drive someone else’s vehicle in Florida?

Yes. The Florida insurance policy on the vehicle being driven is primary, meaning it would pay for injuries or damages first. The liability portion of a car insurance policy you own and are not driving is secondary, paying out if the primary insurance is inadequate.

Am I covered if my car is borrowed by a friend or family member?

Yes. However, if the family member is a household resident and/or the friend is a regular operator of the vehicle, they must be listed as drivers on the policy or a claim can be denied due to a material misrepresentation.

Am I covered for items purchased at the shopping mall and stolen from the car?

No. Coverage for personal items inside your vehicle may be covered by a homeowners or renters insurance policy.

Am I covered if I drive my car in a different state?

Yes. If necessary your Florida auto insurance policy will automatically increase liability limits to be in compliance with another states minimum requirements.

Am I covered for a rental car if someone else is at fault in an accident and my car is in the body shop for repairs?

Yes. Part of the settlement by the at fault drivers insurance company will be reimbursement for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired. If you are the at fault driver than the rental car option, and its additional premium, must be indicated on your declarations page for rental car reimbursement to apply.

Am I covered when driving a rental car on vacation?

Yes. An insured vehicle includes a temporary substitute such as a rental car. A common exclusion to this coverage is when the rental vehicle is used for business or in the course of your occupation.

Am I covered if my car is damaged by fire or hurricane while in the garage?

Yes and no. If the comprehensive option was selected, and is indicated in the declarations page, your policy will pay to repair or replace your vehicle, less any deductible. A homeowners or renters insurance policy will not cover a motor vehicle under any circumstances.

Am I covered for attorney fees if I cause an accident and am being sued?

Yes. The insurance company will make the decision to defend or settle any law suit which is brought against you arising out of the use or ownership of your motor vehicle. It is not necessary for you to retain and pay for an attorney.

Am I covered for towing if my car is disabled from an accident?

Yes and no. When at fault in an accident you must have collision coverage on your auto policy for towing to be a covered expense. If you are not at fault in the accident the other drivers insurance will pay for the tow.

Am I covered for water damage if I drive through a puddle too deep for my car?

Yes and no. Unlike a homeowners or renters policy a separate flood insurance policy is not needed for your car to be covered by water damage. However, the Comprehensive coverage option must be selected to receive compensation for water damage.

Am I covered if my car engine catches fire?

Yes and no. Fire damage is paid for under the Comprehensive portion of your policy. If there is no Comprehensive option on your policy than no coverage will apply.

Am I covered for specialized equipment installed on my vehicle?

Yes and no. If you have Collision and/or Comprehensive options on your policy than most insurance companies will provide a limited amount of payment for specialized equipment (,000 is a typical amount). For additional coverage to apply you may be able to pay an extra premium with your insurance company for more coverage.

Am I covered if my vehicle was damaged while being parked by a valet attendant?

Yes and no. You must have the Collision coverage option on your policy for coverage to apply. Your insurance company may subrogate (collect money) from the valet companies insurance policy to compensate for any monies paid to repair your vehicle.

Article by Franchis Adam

The best possible way to get high quality and low cost insurance in Florida is to obtain free quotes from a large number of companies and then decide which company to opt for as per the requirements. This way you can find out which company provides the cheapest rates and high quality. Whatever the requirement of the customer may be, either a full coverage or liability coverage, one can get premiums easily. This greatly helps to find out the most reliable provider and find out the right policy.

In Florida, if a person is getting registered for a four wheeler or more, he must take care that the insurance company is registered under the Florida department of insurance. If one is not able to maintain his insurance on vehicles, he is liable to suspension of his insurance. The registration of the license and insurance gets suspended. He cannot drive the vehicle unless he brings in a proof of a valid Florida insurance policy. Along with this, he may also be fined. Florida has a very fast pace traffic due to which accidents are very common, hence staying insured is very important. So finding out an insurance company should not be considered a major task because it would be all the more difficult once you get into a situation of a mishap.

In the olden times, things were different in Florida. One had to travel long distances to find out an insurer. One could meet them only when they were free and there were very few numbers of insurers available. This is not the case now. It is your convenience that is preferred now rather than their convenience. You do not have to rely on other people to advise you regarding which agent to chose. In those times getting insured was a difficult task. If you ever happen to forget any details of the policy you were explained, you had to get another appointment for meeting the agent. At the end if everything was fine, then you could possibly come across a decent policy.

If you compare Florida auto insurance with other insurances, you would find that their requirements are the minimum. In property damage liability, at least ,000.00 and in personal injury protection, ,000.00 is required. Agents advise that drivers in Florida should set higher limits of premiums. This may protect them in cases where the other driver driving illegally may hit them.

Is automobile insurance mandatory to register a motor vehicle in Florida?

Yes. Any four wheel motor vehicle must maintain minimum mandatory insurance coverage of ,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and ,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL) as long as your vehicle is registered in Florida.

Can I use the auto insurance policy from my previous State, after moving to Florida, to register a vehicle?

No. Your car insurance policy must be placed by a licensed Florida agent with an insurance company licensed to sell policies in Florida. The same insurance company can be utilized, as long as they are licensed in Florida and a new Florida policy is issued.

What happens if a policy is not kept in force on my Florida registered vehicle?

Your Florida driver license and vehicle registration may be canceled for up to three years or until the required insurance is obtained and proof is presented to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles.

Once a Florida driver’s license is suspended reinstatement fees will apply.

Must a policy be maintained on a Florida registered vehicle that is not being used?

Yes. Any vehicle with a Florida tag and registration must have the required insurance coverage even if the vehicle is not being used.

How can I avoid a suspension on a Florida registered vehicle that is not being used and I want to cancel the insurance?

Surrender the tag and registration prior to cancelling your insurance policy. Show proof of the surrender to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

No doubt about it ? automobile insurance policies are confusing. Most consumers have the misunderstanding that their insurance policy will cover them in case of a car accident; and is made all the more distressing when, occasionally, I have to be the one to inform them that they are mistaken. There are complexities to insurance coverage that, if not understood, can lead to being insufficiently protected. The purpose of this article is to explain some of the basic terms, and several pitfalls that you need to understand when purchasing car insurance. Your insurance coverage falls into two basic categories ? (I) those that protect 3rd parties that you harm; and, (II) coverage that protect you.

Car Insurance Coverage that Protects 3rd Parties ? Generally Referred To As The ?Liability? Coverages.

Property Damage Liability (?PD?): Florida law requires a minimum of ,000.00 in PD coverage. PD covers you if your vehicle damages someone else’s property ? (i.e. not your own property, not even the car involved in the actual accident).

Bodily Injury Liability (?BI?) : While Florida does not require BI coverage, to go without it is a huge mistake. BI covers other people’s injuries for which you are held responsible (i.e. their lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering). BI is there to protect your personal assets, up to the coverage amount, in the event a judgment is entered against you. In addition, the insurance company will typically provide and pay for an attorney to defend a lawsuit that is brought against you. But it is important to remember that both BI and PD coverage do not protect you or anyone on your insurance policy if you are injured. They are strictly there to cover others if you cause an accident. Car Insurance Coverage that Protects You

Personal Injury Protection Coverage (?PIP?): Florida requires that every insured driver have exactly ,000.00 in PIP coverage. Generally speaking, PIP covers 80% of medical and funeral expenses, 60% of lost wages, and any other accident-related expense of the insured, passengers in the insured’s automobile and any pedestrians struck by the insured ? up to, but not to exceed that ,000.00 threshold ? regardless of who was at fault.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM): You may be a terrific driver, but that says nothing about everyone else on the road. Very often, especially in South Florida, the other motorist in a car accident has: (a) very limited liability coverage; (b) no liability coverage (according to the Insurance Research Council, about 1 in 6 drivers in Florida have absolutely no coverage at all); or (c) cannot be identified (read: hit and run). In any case, you want a UM policy that will cover the other accident-causing party’s insurance-coverage shortfalls. UM protects you, your passengers and other named persons on the insurance policy for injuries (up to your elected coverage amount). I highly suggest having as much UM coverage as you can afford. In fact, it is so important; your Florida auto-insurance provider is required by law to offer you UM coverage. In order to deny or waive UM, you have to actually sign a statement verifying that you are declining UM coverage on your policy.

Talk to your car insurance company about adjusting your basic coverages if you now feel you are under-protected. Your insurance representative can also explain some of the other coverage types available to you.

If you are looking for auto insurance in Florida, then you need to be sure that you look closely. You need to do auto insurance comparison for Florida because you might find that you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Here is how to do that comparison.

The first thing you need to do is you should start with an online comparison. Here, you just type in the basic information and they will give you quotes. This will give you a starting point. Then, you can start calling around to get more price comparisons. This just gives you an idea of where you should start calling.

When you call these places, they will ask your age. Age plays a big role in getting insurance. The younger you are, the more your insurances is. That is how that compares. There are other factors as well that play in how much you are going to pay.

The next thing that they will take into consideration would be your gender. It’s been proven through studies that men have a ton more accidents than women. This will say how much you pay in insurance as well.

Florida’s insurance usually is a bit higher as well. That’s because the cost of living is higher and because they have more accidents which is a whole other reason as to why you should do a comparison. When you know how much others will charge you and how much you are actually being charged will put your mind at ease.

Sometimes, you need to just shop around and get comparisons because they have things thing they can do for you due to grades you get or other incentives that you might apply for. When you do this, you see that with giving all the information you can and finding what you would qualify for, you can then get an ideal look at how the companies compare.

Who should have to pay more than they really have to for auto insurance? That is the question to ask. No one should have to pay that much. That is why it’s always wise to do a price comparison. So, start yours if you are living in Florida. Every buck you save, you will be happy about with the price of living in this state. See how they match up. After all, you want to choose one that ranks high in customer service. Set your standards high.
